- Citation :
- Hi, i have a pair of keyhole cichlids that are around 2.5 " long in my 100 litre comuntiy tank and i have been trying to encourage them to breed for some time, providing plenty of spaces.
recently they have been displaying to each other doing a little dance to impress each other and there colours have become much stronger recently. they have also become exremely aggressive to all other tank mates, but they arnt guarding a particualr area, could this mean they want to breed. any information would be great, thank
zac

- Hello,
Thanks for your e-mail, I was happy to see English or american people read our site. What you described to me, is the common behavior before breeding. Your Keyhole must probably breed soon, and you can feed them with freezed food or live food to encourage them. During the first breeding, it's frequent that the parents eat eggs but they will learn during the other breeding how to take care of their fray.
Sorry for my English, I hope you understand what I would like to say...
Bybye

- Hi iv attached a pic showing my 2 keyholes, hopefully you could advise me on there, sex, the pics arnt great, see what you can do.
also a pic ofmy comuntiy tank were the pair are. could you recomend any extra decor or plants? thanks ma réponse - Citation :
- Hello,
It's difficult to say wether they are male or female on pictures because Keyhole didn't show strong sexual dimorphism. And it seems to be that the argument of fins (which suppose to be longer for the male) is not so correct. We can be sure of their sex only during breeding when sexual organ are visible. You can go on this link to look at pictures ..http://maronii.free.fr/dimorphisme.htm.
In their natural habitat, we find a lot of roots, like on this picture

Can I put our discussion in the forum, the other members could perhaps add some elements of answer.

| Hi Zac ! I don't have many things to add after mélanie's advices. Any change in the tank can be the stimulus that will make them breed : you can add a flat stone in a corner of the tank, hidden by a root or some plants for example(they need to have an area easy to defend), change one third of the water, and wait... It seems to me that I see some Pelvicachromis in your tank : are the keyholes able to find a territory ? Another problem is that one male and one female don't always form a good pair. And the biggest problem (at least in France) is that the keyholes you can buy are very far from wild strains and seem to have lost their parental behaviour (just like ramirezis).
Ciao

- Males pelmato are often violent against females until she is not "pregnent". so it happens the female stay during one or two weeks hidden. but she can still have a territory to defend until the day of breeding. The only thing to day is waiting. Her colors will appear again when the male try to charm her for breeding.
These fish look after their offspring very carefully, so it's very important to create separate territory for each species
